Hi Skybluzeans,
You know, i have many lyricists coming to me asking if their works could be marketed, and everytime one comes, i will but sigh...
Let me take this opportunity to address the fate of Singapore lyricists who aspire to succeed in the taiwan pop market.
Most of the time, it is much easier to publish the music than the lyrics. When a record company starts searching for songs, their A&R department usually goes for melodies first. The melody selection stage is the time all the demos are filtered.
After the melodies are chosen, the A&R will usually look for established lyricists within their network to layer the lyrics. This actually means the most of the time, the original lyrics are dropped. The reason is two-fold :
One, in the process of album design, the theme will decide the general direction of the lyrics. Lyrics need to be custom-made for the album.
Two, established lyricists are trusted to be able to deliver better quality lyrics than the ones in the original demos.
You will need a lot of quality work plus luck to have your original lyrics selected.
So if you are a lyricist who comes to me with just plain lyrics without any melodies, i strongly suggest you team up with a composer before submitting a complete demo.
Alternatively, if you wish layer lyrics for our inhouse composers, we need you to submit 2 of your works which are a re-write of existing songs, one fast, one slow. Once shortlisted and contracted, we will assign melodies for you to layer.
Publishing your first lyric is an uphill task. But if you aspire to be the next Xiao3 Han2, the only way is to persevere.
=)
