Chord Progression is a very important element in composing. Most of the time when you hear a wonderful melody, it is because of the chord progression.
Just take for example the song "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".
+Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, How I wonder what you are?+
If you play | C - C - F - C | G - C - G - C | , it will be just plain water...
However, if you play | C - G/B - F#dim - Em | Ddim - C/E - G7 - Cmaj7| , it will be a flavoured drink...
If you want to write wonderful melodies, your understanding of complex chords is very important. Not only do diminishing and augmentation make a difference, chord inversions like G/B, C/E also do magic. Other decorations include 7, 9, 11, 13, maj7, sus2, sus4. The list is very long.
Do some research on the internet yourself ya! =)
